What can we say other than Steve Peat rules the downhill in Lisbon, should be voted for mayor of the town at the very least! Peaty wins the downhill in Lisbon for the 6th year in a row, obliterating the nearest competitor by 2.624 seconds, and that is teammate, Nathan Rennie. If you could say this was a great romp for the Santa Cruz Syndicate, you would be correct.

Words By Steve Peat

The season has certainly kicked off with a bang for me! Last weekend was Sea Otter and this weekend I raced our first UK National of the year held in Innerleithen, Scotland. The NPS is under new management this season and I must say it was refreshing to see a good buzz around the pits and a
professional set up for the racing.

Brian Vernor is a filmmaker. He made a moody and artistic film about cyclocross a couple years ago titled “Pure Sweet Hell” that is a must for anyone into the whole skinny-tire masochism of ‘cross. Brian also works as a builder here at SCB, along with some other over-talented freaks, artistes and bike riding martyrs.

Heading into the UCI World Cup Finals in the charming Austrian village of Schladming, Santa Cruz Syndicate’s Steve Peat lead the points race by 178 points over Greg Minnaar. Mathematically, Peat was assured of a
top two finish, but by no means felt he had a lock on the series overall. Minnaar was bringing his best game to the table and was going to challenge Peat to the end.
The long course tumbles down the mountain with high-speed sections, trees, and open, grassy off camber turns, and the track is rough as hell. The grassy corners toward the bottom of the course were particularly challenging, and I must say that Kovarik ruled the corner with his attacking, let it loose style. Practice sessions went well for Rennie and
Peat; their Santa Cruz V-10’s lessened the beating from the demanding track. “It’s the kind of course that you are constantly turning on. There are short straightaway sections, so you have to keep linking up the turns,” said Rennie.

Hell Rider, Mark Weir is sharpening his scythe and he's enlisted MTB legend Juli Furtado to join in the fun. There's no great way to sum up the whole Hell Ride experience in a sentence or two, so check out the HR3 description and details, and read last years Hell Ride 2 report. Then fill out the application, and start training for pain in the lucky (Or is it unlucky?) event that you become one of the chosen …Oh, and there is the added bonus that you may take home a fully-tricked-out Santa Cruz Nomad if you "win".

Held in the streets of the historic city of Quebec, dirt jumpers, 4X racers and downhillers converged on the downtown café row to race down the street in a slalom/jump race. As the first heat of two racers crossed the finish line, the heavens opened up and drenched the scene, making the cobbles and wooden jumps treacherous.

Steve Peat (Santa Cruz Syndicate/SRAM/Rock Shox) comes out on top and Nathan Rennie joins him on the downhill podium in fourth position at the
UCI World Cup Downhill in Willingen, Germany. After two and a half weeks of rain everyday, the team enjoyed their first dry day with bits of sunshine when they arrived in the quaint German town of Willingen found nestled in a green valley surrounded by pine covered hills. Even still, the downhill track was muddy, as it had rained for weeks here, too, and the grassy off camber turns sent riders tumbling.

May 7th, Vigo, Spain

Santa Cruz Syndicate teammates Nathan Rennie and Steve Peat (Santa Cruz, SRAM, RockShox), and Marc Beaumont of Team MBUK Santa Cruz, rode their Santa Cruz V-10's fast enough to reach the podium at the UCI World Cup Downhill held May 7th. Mick Hannah wins the event, his first world cup victory, and Gee Atherton rounds out the top five.

The UCI World Cup season opener returned to the bustling seaside city of Vigo, Spain. Reaching the venue is surprising in that one can hardly imagine that the narrow twisting road would lead you to the hillside of gum and pine trees with views of the sea, side by side with homes and gardens, and pastures of grazing horses. And one is truly astounded when 12,000 plus spectators show up to watch the events!

the crewIt's been a whirlwind of a season opener for the Santa Cruz Syndicate. Two podiums at the Sea Otter Classic held this past weekend in Monterey, California top off the past three weeks. Steve Peat placed 5th in the Pro Men's Downhill, and John Waddell placed 2nd in the Expert Men 25-29 cross-country category. Waddell raced strong in the rain to come second, as he made his North American racing debut since suffering a major head injury in 2003.
